Until the advent of hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI), the evolution of IT infrastructure was largely incremental, defined mostly by technological advances in chipsets. On one hand, converged infrastructure uniquely addressed the challenge of configuration, but even that market evolved along with updates to its individual compute, storage and networking components. HCI, on the other hand, has solved both infrastructure complexity and organizational skills gaps that are now prevalent in on-premises environments amid the age of public cloud. With relatively quick deployment, ease of management that requires no special skills and a healthy dose of automation, HCI represents a significant overhaul in infrastructure deployment strategies that allows organizations to enable cloudlike provisioning and access in their own datacenters.
