WANs connect users to their applications; anytime, from anywhere. Until recently, organisations built their WAN by connecting branch offices to a corporate data centre, via a router, over a leased line connection – often using packet switching methods like Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS).

But as businesses have evolved, so too have their traffic patterns. MPLS works well when business applications are entirely hosted in enterprise data centres. But it was never designed to accommodate the bandwidth-hungry realities of work-anywhere solutions and corporate applications like CRM and desktop productivity tools that are increasingly hosted in the cloud.

As such, traditional WANs could soon be things of the past
