State of the flexible nation

The benefits flexible working can deliver to Australians

Published January 2017

Flexible working practices are big news in Australia. Reports detailing the benefits of flexible working and describing the many well-known global businesses normalising flexible working practices has contributed to a belief that flexible working is ubiquitous with Australian work life.

This research looks at the true state of flexible working across a full cross section of Australian businesses, from large enterprise, to mid-market and small to mid-size enterprises (SMEs). The research uncovered a number of misconceptions about flexible working and the reality of work today, experienced by office workers.

The report found despite obstacles including an often blind adherence to traditional working practices at many organisations, there was a huge untapped demand among workers for flexible working. People want to take advantage of technology to work at the locations and times of their choice.
